“I think, therefore I am”
Rene Descartes

The human brain is quite powerful.  Perceptions become reality, reality becomes folly.  Those seeking personal and professional growth cannot allow their thinking to inhibit them. Strategies such as understanding the power of thought, defining your goals and then taking the actions needed to achieve it, and delaying gratification so as to avoid being thrown off course can help.

You Are What You Think
Descartes penned the phrase “I think, therefore I am” as a part of a philosophical discourse to justify that we are humans (1637).  What his phrase really provides is reinforcement that our perceptions influence our realities.  Napoleon Hill took this discourse further in his popular tome,Think and Grow Rich.  Hill encouraged his readers to shift their thinking so that they visualize success and view themselves as successful.  Hill understood that our perveptions influence how we act, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Know What You Want, Then Chase It
Goals without action are nothing more than dreams that will never become reality.  Create a vision board or make a list of the top 5-10 goals that you wish to achieve.  Include the key actions that you must take for each one.  Look at it daily and measure your progress.  High achievers approach what they want with intense focus, dedication and energy.

Delay Gratification
The popular book, Don’t Eat That Marshmallow” reinforces the role that delaying gratification has in helping those who want to be successful, be successful.  On a quest for wealth, it is easy to get sidetracked, with what can often be perceived as show or ostenacious displays of consumption.  While it is important to pay yourself, successful people avoid squandering their time, money and focus on things that will not lead them to their end game.  Some studies show that those who deay gratification tend to bemore successful.

By avoiding negative self talk, dwveloping a plan then chasing it, and avoiding distractions that don’t support your goal, you are able to use your mind to visualize a successful future.
